The Catholic News Agency (CNA) announced on Tuesday that the Vatican was viewing a photo of Brazilian model and Twitch streamer Natalia Gariboto, who was “liked”
The image shows Gariboto dressed in lingerie, resembling a school uniform, with a clearly exposed largely uncovered back.
While the CNA said it was unclear when the pope’s account liked the image, it was visible and reported in the newsletters on November 13, and then disliked on November 14.
An employee of the Holy See’s press office declined to comment on the incident when he contacted CNA, although sources close to the Vatican’s press office confirmed that the Instagram account was managed by a team of officials and that an internal investigation was underway.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni told CNN on Friday that he was “in contact with Instagram to find out what happened.”
Facebook, which owns Instagram, told CNN that “the problem is currently being investigated in close contact with the Holy See.”
While the pope’s official Instagram account has approximately 7.4 million followers, the account does not track anyone back, with CNN reporting that there is no evidence that the pope himself likes the image.
COY Co., Garibotto’s management and publicity company, drew attention to the incident on its Instagram account, writing, „COY Co. received the OFFICIAL BLESSING OF THE POPE thanks to our emblematic queen “, marking Gariboto with laughter for emoticons.
Gariboto also commented on the issue, tweeting on November 13, “At least I’m going to heaven.”
