Chadwick has been revealed to have filmed his most iconic roles since his diagnosis in 2016, while keeping his illness private.

This week, in a new interview with Zora, Viola Davis talks about working with Chadwick on his latest film, Netflix’s The black bottom of Ma Rainey.

Based on the eponymous winning play by August Wilson, the film follows Ma Rainey, a blues singer in the 1920s in Chicago who fights competition and relationships in the music industry. Viola plays Ma Rainey while Chadwick plays Levee, a trumpet player in the band aspiring to go solo.

“He was extremely tired,” the Oscar winner said, remembering Chadwick. “But there are a lot of tired people in business, especially people in his position.”
