Virginia Deer Hunters Remind Mandatory Disease Sampling Saturday

Deer killed in certain cities must be tested.

If you are hunting in Virginia, here's what to keep in mind this weekend.

The Virginia Department of Game and Fisheries conducts mandatory chronic disease (CWD) sampling.

CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects deer. This is a serious concern for the deer population, although officials say it does not pose a risk to the health of humans or pets.

There are two disease management zones on Saturday.

If you kill deer in these areas, you will need to comply with the sample:

  • Disease Management Area 1
    • Clark, Frederick, Shenandoah and Warren
    • Find a sampling location here.
  • Disease Management Area 2
    • Madison and Orange County
    • Find a sampling location here.

DGIF reminds hunters that whole deer carcasses killed in the disease management area cannot be transported outside the area. The Centers for Disease Control also recommends that all deer killed in areas known to be infected with CWD be tested before consumption.
