A first-year student from Virginia Tech has been accused of fatally beating a man because he was fishing and leaving him to die, even though he heard his alleged victim “bubbling and bubbling,” he said.
The Roanoke Times reported that David Ethu was charged with second-degree murder. He received bail on Wednesday.
The newspaper reports that Etute claims to have confessed to police that he punched 40-year-old Jerry Paul Smith in the face and “stepped on” him after learning he was not a woman.
Ettet said he visited Smith’s apartment in April after being paired with someone named “Angie” on Tinder, but when he returned on May 31
The newspaper reports that Smith’s body is in an apartment the next day.
Jimmy Turk, Etute’s lawyer, told the court that the case was “more than just someone coming into an apartment and beating someone.”

The New York Post reported that Turk told reporters out of court: “No one deserves to die, but I don’t mind saying, don’t pretend to be something you are not. Don’t direct or entice anyone under this view. That’s just wrong. “
