Austin (KXAN) – Walmart plans to hire more truck drivers and raise wages for drivers already driving the company
The company hired more than 1400 drivers over 2018 and currently has around 8000 drivers. This year, Walmart plans to add another 900 drivers to its fleet.
The payment of existing drivers will be increased from February. "The increase of one cent per mile and the extra pay for each arrival means that Walmart drivers will earn an average of $ 87,500 per year and a total of about 89 cents a mile," officials wrote. Drivers also offer advantages and other benefits on the first day of employment. The only catch is that they want experienced drivers. "To qualify for the board, drivers must now meet Walmart's high minimum standards for their private drivers, which includes 30-month experience over the last three years and a clean safety record," officials write. In December, Business Insider announced that the rigorous Walmart selection process for truck drivers was loosened due to a shortage of trucks. Employees who are usually engaged in a career as a truck driver have moved to industries that have higher paid jobs without the challenges of work, according to the report.
