A wanted serial killer who was in high school when he fatally cut the throat of a 14-year-old classmate has died behind bars in Florida, online records show.
Michael Hernandez was a 31-year-old inmate at the Columbia Correctional Institution near Jacksonville when he collapsed and died Thursday, possibly from a drug overdose, according to the Florida Department of Corrections and local branch of CBS-TV WFOR.
The official cause of Hernandez’s death has yet to be determined, although no violation is suspected, authorities said.
But he was seen on video collapse, and two sources familiar with the incident said Hernandez may have died from drugs, the source said.

Hernandez – who was obsessed with serial killers and had devised a list of people he wanted to kill – then stabbed Gaff 40 times and slit his throat.
Then the kid went to class – with the bloody knife in his backpack.
A teacher noticed the student’s blood and called the cops.
Hernandez tried to use protection against insanity during the trial, but the jurors refused, pleading guilty and ordering him to serve his life behind bars.
His victim’s father, Jorge Goff, said he was “shocked” to learn of Hernandez’s death.
“I didn’t expect that at all,” Goff told the Miami Herald.
As for his son, the father said, “We miss him and the big question is: What would he be like today?”
