WeWork CEO: “Least Engaged” Employees Work From Home



If you enjoyed working from home during the pandemic – without commuting to work, cooking lunch in your own kitchen, or more often around the family – the WeWork CEO has some thoughts for you.

“Those who are least engaged find it very comfortable to work from home,” said Sandpipe Matrani, chief executive of the coworking company, at an event at the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday. “Those who are überly engaged with the company want to go to the office at least two-thirds of the time.”

“People are happier when they come to work,”

; he added. The company relies on people who want – or are required – to work outside their homes when it is safe to do so widely.

His comments were not well received by many online, as many companies and employees consider the job after Covid-19 after more than a year at home.

“I wonder why the CEO of a company that rents office space would say that,” a Twitter user wrote.

Others note that working from home benefits parents and that working from home has improved the mental health of some workers.

Ann Johnson, corporate vice president at Microsoft, writes, “If the only way to keep your employees engaged is to be in the office with them, you’re having a leadership problem, not an employee commitment.”

Google said this month that it will ease its remote work protocols and that it expects 20 percent of its employees to work remotely once its offices reopen. The technology giant had previously been one of those detained in the flexible telecommuting industry, and Insider said some employees had threatened to leave if they could not continue working from home.
