What is it like to run a New York City Marathon at 56 and 26 years old

The first Sunday in November turned out to be a beautiful fall day.

On Sunday, about 53,000 people took to the streets to run from Staten Island to Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, before finally making their way 26.2 miles to New York Central Park as part of TCS New York Marathon. There were about 1 million spectators on the streets cheering us on with high heels and light snacks.

My father, 56, and I, 26, were there to run the race. What we found was a set of emotions and a new love for NYC and our competitors.

Going into the marathon our personal ratings were:

  • Chris: 3:47, at the 201
9 Chicago Marathon just three weeks before the NYC Marathon
  • Lydia: 4:43, at the 2018 Chicago Marathon.

We were hoping that our training schemes have paid off. Here's how to get into the New York City Marathon for the first time.
