Madison, Wisconsin – If you have been vaccinated against COVID, you have probably thought about how long it will last. Many doctors say booster photos will probably be needed, but they are still trying to figure out when that might be.
“In a normal, non-pandemic situation, we would probably get these answers before the vaccines were released, but we are not in that situation and we had to get people vaccinated quickly,”
He said the data the doctors had showed that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were still at least 90% effective six months after the injection.
Sometime after these six months, a person’s immunity to the virus will fall. It may be a year after their first shot or even three years later, but not enough time has passed to test this.
Johnson & Johnson is a different type of vaccine.
“With these adenovirus vaccines, it is possible that the effectiveness of the vaccine will increase over time,” Hartmann said.
So, if you get the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, your immunity will probably improve over time. It will be more effective in three months than it was a month after your shot. So a booster may be needed later than for those who have received Pfizer or Moderna.
“I expect all of these vaccines to have different points at which they have reached this peak, and then you will see a decline in immunity,” Hartmann said. “At some point, everything will be one vaccine and everyone can be on the same card.”
But the options will always threaten to slow down the vaccination process and will require booster shots even earlier. While Pfizer and Moderna have proven effective against the British version, other options or new options may be sustainable.
“If we say that the South African version (towards Wisconsin) or the California version has entered, we may have to look at the boosters as to whether we should make a booster against this option,” Hartmann said.
It is not yet known if you will need to get the same brand of booster shot you did from the original vaccine.
