Wisconsin health officials confirm the COVID-19 option for South Africa

Madison, Wisconsin (WBAY) – Wisconsin health officials say another variant of the COVID-19 virus has been found in Wisconsin. The variant for South Africa, referred to as B.1.351, is more contagious and spreads faster than the original COVID-19 virus.

Healthcare professionals still do not know whether the option with South Africa is more dangerous or whether the risk of serious symptoms of COVID-19 is the same.

This is the second variant of the COVID-19 virus, confirmed in Wisconsin. On Thursday, Deputy Health Minister Julie Williams Van Dyck said there were 1

9 confirmed cases of a UK variant in Wisconsin – up to 26 on Friday. She said this is a conservative number, as a small proportion of coronavirus cases receive genome tests to determine the strain of the virus.

The health ministry says the finding demonstrates the need to remain vigilant against the coronavirus by wearing masks, washing hands and social distance. Health officials say preliminary evidence suggests that Moderna is less effective against the South African variant but this is not definite.
