Worker accused of stealing hundreds of blank COVID-19 vaccine cards in California

A Nevada man was charged Wednesday with stealing hundreds of blank vaccine cards against COVID-19 from a vaccination center in Southern California.

Mohamed Rauf Ahmed of Las Vegas claims to have taken more than 500 tickets from the Pomona Fairplex center in April.

The former Los Angeles City contract official has been charged with a felony of grand theft and is scheduled to stand trial in Division F of the Pomona branch of the Los Angeles County Supreme Court on Aug. 25.

It was not immediately clear whether Ahmed, 45, had a lawyer.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the La Verne Police Department (LVPD) wrote on Tuesday that detectives were informed of possible theft and misappropriation of blank vaccine cards by an employee at the scene on April 27.

After reacting to the scene, officers found that the suspect had stolen blank cards ̵

1; a total of 528 – and put them in his car and hotel room.

“La Verne police detectives have conducted a criminal investigation with the assistance and cooperation of the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health,” the agency said. “Mohamed Rauf Ahmed, 45, from Las Vegas, Nevada, was arrested. Ahmed was a non-clinical contract employee hired to support the vaccination site.”

In a separate statement, the Los Angeles County Attorney’s Office said the cards Ahmed had stolen were worth “at least $ 15 in cash if sold illegally.”

“The sale of fraudulent and stolen vaccine cards is illegal, immoral and puts society at risk of being exposed to a deadly virus,” said District Attorney George Gascon.

The case remains under investigation.
