Yes, you read that right.
The concept phone display wraps on both sides of the phone and widens the aaaaaaall path to the back. The only frame of the phone is the narrow bar at the back, which houses the camera settings. Oh, and that camera setup? It combines a 108-megapixel arrow with a 12-megapixel telephoto lens (for 2x optical zoom) and a 20-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera.
One hundred. And eight. Megapixels.
The camera captures 12,032 images with resolution 9,024, says Xiaomi. This is many pixels. More megapixels don't always mean better shots – the Huawei P20 Pro takes great shots with a 40MP lens, but Google Pixel 3 does the same – if not better shots with a 12.2MP lens – but it's hard not to be intrigued 108 megapixels. To demonstrate his wisdom, Xiaomi demonstrated a photo taken with the camera and then showed that you can zoom in up to 8 times without losing much detail.
The phone sides will display reminders and notifications. The back will sleep when you use your phone as you normally would (ie use the front screen), but will turn on when you turn the phone around. There you will have a shortcut display of your most used applications.
And your selfie game is about to be stronger than ever. When you rotate Mix Alpha around, the rear camera becomes the front camera. You'll use this, all 108 megapixels of it, to capture your selfies.
The phone runs on the first-rate hardware you'd expect. Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus processor, 12 GB RAM and 512 GB memory. This is the inside of the Mi 9 Pro 5G that Xiaomi announced with the Mi Mix Alpha.
Mi Mix Alpha is a concept phone, but it will actually come on the market. However, only a small number of units will be made. And it will cost 20,000 yuan, which translates into $ 2,815, $ 1,450 and 2,265 pounds. Who ever said the future would be cheap?
Xiaomi made its name as an Apple branch, but is responsible for some serious innovation. Not only does it make this absolutely insane phone, its first Mi Mix in 2016– which is now common across all Android brands.
