Your Guide to Cincinnati's BLINK, Interactive and Illuminating Adventure

BLINK returns in 2019, stretching from the shores of northern Kentucky to Findlay Market in Cincinnati. Distributing over 30 city blocks in two cities with over 100 installations, the festival is the largest light, art and cultural event of its kind in the nation. The inaugural four-night event in 2017 was the largest gathering of people in downtown Cincinnati and over the Rhine. Organizers expect this year's light festival to be even bigger. Feeling overwhelmed? We know there's a lot to take on – but don't worry, we'll share it for you. Here's what you need to know, along with some tips to make your BLINK experience even better. BLICK 1

01 Let's start with the basics. After all, this is only the second year of the festival. BLINK runs Thursday through Sunday, 7-11pm every day. It consists of five zones extending from Findlay Market to Northern Kentucky. We will discuss each of these areas in detail later. BLINK is 100 percent free to the public. It is designed around the Cincinnati fireplace route and is intended to be walkable – this is not a drive-by event. So what exactly is it? This is a phenomenon of outdoor art with 100 installations, including large-scale projection maps, murals and interactive light sculptures and art. The city will literally glow – from glowing facades to flashing lanes. The organizers hire local, national and international artists to participate in the large-scale city extravaganza. EXPECTED DESIGNS OF ROAD CONCLUSIONS AND LARGE CIRCLES Organizers say they expect 1.5 million people to attend BLINK this year. To put this in perspective, this is more than twice the size of Oktoberfest Zinzinnati. Those traveling in the city need to know about dozens of traffic restrictions and road closures. Cincinnati city officials say they plan to restrict access to several primary and side streets in the city center, starting every night on BLINK. Access will be granted to residents and businesses at any closure, city officials said. STREET LOCKING CARDS: Click here to see the closures during the BLINK // Click here to see the closures for the BLINK parade, WHERE TO STOP? HOW TO CONTENT? This is where it can be tricky to drive. BLINK is not designed as a drive-thru event. It is intended for off-vehicle use. Participants are urged to make the most of public transit and find parking in the blocks and neighborhoods around the venue (not the event site itself). There are several metro parking and management locations in the city, including the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal, Cincinnati State University and Northern Kentucky.BLINK is designed around the Cincarnati Bell Connector Streetcar route that will remain open during the event – and you'll be free to drive after 4pm during the four lights of BLINK But be warned, street cars are expected to be extremely crowded. Walking may be your best option. NOTE: Electronic scooters will be geo-graded to slow down and shut down near and within the BLINK event area where they are prohibited from riding. To find a parking space near you, click here. IT START With PARADEA launching BLINK 2019 at 7:30 pm Thursday. The parade will head south on Vine Street in downtown Cincinnati, from Eighth Street to Rosa Parks Street and West Freedom Way at The Banks. The parade will feature more than 3,000 participants and bands from across the city and beyond, illuminating the streets with glowing floats, puppets, musicians and performers. World-renowned chef Jean-Robert Cavel will be the grand marshal of the event. WHAT TO SEE THE ATTRACTIONS? From 100+ installations, it's hard to pick favorites. Everything is new in 2019, and there will be a few cross-dressers who make themselves the favorites of the crowd throughout the event. We have a look at Cincinnati's iconic structures that are set to shine. The Roebling Bridge is initially set to light and sing, organizers say. Tumbling: A Modern Voice for the Singing Bridge is set to bring the bridge to life. Masary Studios staff have created a musical and lighting score for the bridge, the culmination of a months-long endeavor. The "re: Faction" at the Genius of Water statue at Fountain Square also looks like an early crowd pleaser, with light adding color and movement to one of Cincinnati's most iconic symbols. The Air Dodecalis Architects' Luminarium in Washington Park was a big hit in 2017. It has been redesigned and re-planned to shudder, offering dazzling mazes and winding paths in the popular park over the Rhine. This installation is marked. Other installations that caught our eye include the largest disco ball in the world, the energy cycle, entropy, glass fabric and justice, Cincinnatus 3D, light fluxes and neon flux. THE LOWER ZONELET enters the different BLINK zones. The central area – the city center – is a haven for projection lighting. Situated between Central Parkway and 3rd Street, this area has a staggering 12 light projections and eight installations. Most of these attractions are the Main and Walnut streets (again, following the tram routes) and the Central Parkway. Some of the highlights may be the "re: faction" of Fountain Square, the "portal" of the Contemporary Arts Center and the "glass fabric and justice" of the courtroom. The OTR ZONECincinnati neighborhood over the Rhine is actually divided into two zones, in the name of BLINK. The OTR zone refers to the area between Svoboda Street and Central Park, extending from Sycamore Street to Bryast. Thirteen installations and eight projections will take over the Cincinnati quarter over the Rhine. The most densely populated area is around Washington Park. You will find the architects of the Air Dodecalis Luminarium (as listed above) in addition to five other installations and two light projections. The crickets will be singing inside the Music Hall (literally), and the nearby Memorial Hall and the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company will include projection mapping on Elm Street. Main Street is littered with light projections and installations and The Art Academy of Cincinnati seems to be a hot spot for BLINKers. BEST ZONE MARKET The second zone above the Rhine is a mural shelter. Sixteen new murals will adorn the facades of buildings in this area, north of Liberty Street and around the historic Findlay Market. Follow the tram routes again in this area as the action is on Elm and Race streets. In addition to the murals, there are three installations and six light projections throughout the area. ZONES BANK You do not have to walk much to view the Banking Zone, with nine installations and three projections along the banks of the Ohio River. Smale Riverfront Park will be a hotspot for BLINKers, overlooking the glowing Roebling Bridge against a backdrop of glittering installations. Light projections – HUEmanity and Dreams Etched in Stone – will ignite the National Underground Railroad and Mural Painting on the Great American Ball Park facade. THE COLORS OF THE COVINGTON AREA this year is moving to Kentucky, with the emblematic Robling Bridge connecting the cities of Cincinnati and Covington. The road to Covington will be a little different – after all, there are no tram car lanes, but a pedestrian trail follows, Most of the magic will happen around Madison Avenue. Covington will feature a huge 13 projections, along with five projections and murals. WHAT ABOUT MUSIC? It's not just a light show. BLINK will also include a massive and diverse six-stage music line. More than 80 entertainers will take the stage all four nights. National record label Grouplove will play a free Friday show. Other acts featured include Redfoo, Pomegranates, Dudley Taft, Detroit's Ernie Johnson, Cincinnati Opera, Willie Jones, Sun Seeker, Bendigo Fletcher, Young Heirlooms, Telehope, Rob Fetters, Harbor, Jess Lamb, JSPH, Carriers, Maria Carrelli, All Seeing Eyes, Lauren Eilis, Multimagics, Elementals, Dinosul, Cincinnati Buskers Music Accelerator and more. The music will be played in six stages. These stages include: Wellness Your Way Rivercenter Stage (10 East Rivercenter Boulevard, Covington, Kentucky): Click here for full lineup. 7th Street Covington Stage (26 West 7th Street, Covington, Kentucky): Click here for full lineup. AARP Freedom Way Stage (10 Freedom Way East, Cincinnati): Click here for full lineup. Belterra Court Street Stage (30 East Court Street, Cincinnati): Click here for full lineup. Food, Pepsi products, water and alcoholic beverages are offered in many places during the event. You are also in the heart of Cincinnati – and there is no shortage of bars and restaurants. WHAT ARE THE OUTSIDE FEEDING HOURS? There are many things to do before and after the show, including BLINK events as a Talks artist. There are also several guide services on the BLINK terrain. Here is a complete list of daily events. Organizers also encourage BLINK visitors to visit one of BLINK's aftermarket restaurants, bars and nightclubs. HOW DOES THE SEA WATCH? Thursday will be a great night for a walk around the city. Expect temperatures around 70 degrees Celsius. Friday may be a little more painful. Temperatures will be around 70 degrees in the evening, but rain showers will arrive by Friday evening – look for scattered showers after 7 hours. Showers will not be heavy, but pack a raincoat … just in case. Saturday should be dry by evening, but pack your coat! Colder air will absorb and temperatures will drop – expect temperatures only in the upper 40s or 50s by Saturday afternoon and evening. Sunday will be clear and cool with expectations expected in the mid / upper 60s. Sunday night, to close BLINK, it will be in the mid-50s. WHAT IS SECURITY? As the extended BLINK reunites before its big debut on Thursday, police have been planning an enhanced presence. 1.5 million people are expected to dive straight into the immersive art and light show. Authorities said they have a plan to keep everyone safe. Cincinnati police say that wherever you go in the five zones, there will be additional staff. They said you would be able to see some of the employees, but there would be some that you would not see.
